Ang Ku Kuih is a traditional Asian sweet treat known for its soft, chewy texture and its beautiful tortoise-shell imprint. The name translates to “Red Tortoise Cake,” a symbol of good luck and longevity.

The outer layer is made from glutinous rice flour, giving it a bouncy, mochi-like chew. It’s lightly sweet and typically coloured red though you’ll also find versions in green, orange, or even multiple colours often using natural food colourings.

Inside, you’ll find a smooth, sweet filling, most commonly made from mung bean paste. This gives the kuih a soft, creamy texture and a gentle, comforting flavour. Some variations use peanut, coconut, or red bean fillings, but mung bean remains the classic and most traditional option.

Each kuih is steamed to achieve its signature shine and tender chewiness.

How to eat it:

Ang Ku Kuih is best enjoyed at room temperature. Simply pick it up, take a bite, and enjoy the slightly sticky, chewy skin together with the smooth sweet filling. It’s meant to be savoured slowly so you can appreciate its delicate texture and flavour.

Ideal for festive occasions, gifting, or simply enjoying a nostalgic snack.
